Indian head massage has evolved from traditional techniques that have been practiced in India for thousands of years. The Ayurveda, the Indian scriptural test and foundation of Ayurvedic medicine was compiled around 1800BC and is on record as the oldest Indian healing system.
Ayurvedic means the “art of life” or has also been defined as the “science of longevity” and works on the principle that health results from the harmony within ones self and that life must have a balance of all the elements, ether, air, fire, water, and earth. Different components of our bodies belong to one of theses elements.
Fear and love belong to the ether element
Breathing and motor functions belong to the air element
Intelligence and hate belong to the fire element
Lympth belongs to the water element
Skin and bones belong to the earth element
The Ayurvedic view is that health is maintained by the balance of three subtle life giving forces or doshas, which are vata, pitta and kapha.
Vata – this is a combination of ether and air and it is responsible for all the movements of the mind, body and senses, and the process of elimination. The unique characteristic of Vata is dryness.
Pitta – this is a combination of fire and water and is responsible for energy and heat, metabolism and digestive functions of the body. The unique characteristic of Pitta is heat
Kapha – this is a combination of earth and water and is responsible for physical stability, fluid balance and proper body structure. The unique characteristic of Kapha is heaviness.
